Berner Cuisine

A doggy restaurant with a flare for fine dining. Okay, just kidding (kind of). Here is how and why we feed our Berners the way we do.

Please read this first

We are not telling anyone what or how to feed. Everything on this page is what we do with our own dogs and why, shared as suggestions only.

  • Every dog is an individual, with different calorie, mineral and vitamin needs.
  • Feeding without enough research can seriously affect a dog’s health.
  • For diet decisions, we recommend a veterinary nutritionist rather than a regular veterinarian. Ideally, choose a holistic veterinarian who also holds a degree in nutrition.

Why home-made food?

The reason we started feeding a home-made diet is Kardia. On her 13-month birthday, after eating commercial kibble, she became so ill that she lost 10 pounds and needed IV drips and countless medications to save her life. Almost 14 days later, her health finally bounced back.

Ever since, we decided to place our dogs’ nutrition and well-being in our own hands, other than in life or death situations. In our experience, home-made food provides wholesome nutrition and, most important, bioavailability. That is a fancy word for how easily the body absorbs nutrients. The less processed the food, the easier it is to absorb.

We are always learning, and we encourage you to read and research too. Real understanding comes from good books and good professionals, so please treat this page as a starting point.

Kefir

Kefir is a fermented milk drink with live cultures, and it is a favorite in our kitchen. We think it is worth getting to know, and we invite you to do your own research. The two Forever Dog books above are a wonderful place to start learning about kefir and its benefits.

As with anything new, please talk with your veterinary nutritionist before adding it to your dog’s diet.

Here we are

It is no secret that the better we eat, the better we feel. The same can be said of our dogs. They cannot tell us “I feel much better on this diet,” but we can see it in their coats, yearly blood tests and health screenings. These are examples of meals we make for our dogs, photographed in our kitchen, cooked with our hands and fed to the dogs you see happily chomping on home-made treats in the video below.
